英語原文:外資系調査会社に見事転職成功! プライベートレッスンを受けた生徒様の成功例のご紹介(第2弾)弊社講師 Qing Wuからのレポート
1. Student’s Name: Ami-san
2. Gender: Female
3. Type of company and work roles: an Account manager in a foreign research company
Ami-san previously worked in a sales role at a Japanese company. She had been learning English for a while before I met her, as she was motivated to change jobs and work in an English-speaking environment. We started off with studying business vocabulary from Stellar’s Advanced level textbook, which Ami-san said really helped expand her vocabulary. Each lesson, we also did role play and analyzed case studies to help her get used to the Western business culture, phrases and conversation topics. Since she sometimes had to sell products using English, Ami-san designed posters and tried selling products to me for a few sessions where she was able to learn English sales phrases. In addition, through the use of online tools like Googledocs, sheets and slides I could easily make corrections, which Ami-san found was useful in helping her to remember new knowledge.
A few months ago, both Ami-san and I did job-hunting at the same time. We shared our experiences and exchanged tips with each other. During that time, she had to do job interviews in English so we practiced her self-PR and did mock interviews. Not long ago, she successfully changed her job and now works as an account manager in a foreign research company. Now, Ami-san wants to focus on building the ability to share her opinions and communicate smoothly with clients using English as she will need it for her new job. Thus, we spend every other session discussing an advanced topic. She prepares her answer for homework and presents her opinion, giving reasons and examples. Ami-san says it has improved her ability to speak more confidently and how to structure and present her answers more persuasively.
Aside from work, recently Ami-san also started her own online English conversation club. She sometimes picks out some things we learnt in our PCE lessons like phrases or topics to use in her club. She often shares a summary of each of her club’s sessions with me. I am proud of how rapidly her ability to manage a conversation and summarize what other people say has improved.
Lastly, Ami-san tells me that Zoom lessons helped her adapt well to the new Work From Home culture, as she had to do virtual interviews during job hunting and she now has to hold online meetings with colleagues and clients.
4. Objectives of learning English:
For work in an English environment:
- share opinions with co-workers during meetings, catch the conversation,
- reading research materials, highlight the key points from an article and summarize the content
- improve communication with clients
5. What successes does this student achieve?
- Got employed by a foreign firm due to increased English ability
- Was able to study an overseas professional course in English and successfully gained a CAP (Certified Administrative Professional - accounting, management, organization, IT, document management skills) certification
- Started her own online English conversation club, picks out some topics and gathers participants. Each session, Ami-san leads the conversation and practices sharing her opinions as well as summarizing what other people say.
6. How was the success obtained?
- Making vocabulary stories using new words from a Business textbook
- Discussion and analysis of case studies from the textbook
- Discussion of advanced topics (from IELTS/EIKEN): gained ability to present her opinions more persuasively using examples and advanced expressions like “on the other hand”
- Exchanging job hunting stories (-> get some background for business)
- Mock interview practice for job-hunting
7. What specific teaching methods lead to this success?
- Zoom: web meeting during job hunting, job meeting with companies for job (similar to PCE-style)
- Googledocs - can summarize the points of the lessons, easy to do corrections with this method; very practical for learning as teacher and student can share screen, Youtube videos and easily use other materials on top of the textbook
- Ami-san did hands-on tasks like prepare presentations, practices sales skills, present case studies, which increased her ability to share opinions and summarize information in English
8. What other advantages can students take away from Stellar private lessons?
- cultural exchange with foreign teacher
- sharing life experiences e.g. job-hunting
- Natural English conversation phrases like pick up / pick out
