4. Objectives of learning English: Runa’s goal was to become better at speaking and understanding English. More specifically, being able to respond fast and accurately to any question or topic.
5. What successes does this student achieve?
At the beginning of my lessons with Runa her comprehension skills were low. One of the biggest successes was the improvement of her comprehension abilities. When we first started, Runa found it difficult to understand normal-paced English conversations. However, after much studying and practice she is now able to listen to English conversations with ease.
6. How was the success obtained?
There were several different techniques used to help Runa improve her English skills. There were two main lessons I created to help. The first lesson was geared towards listening and comprehension only. There are three tiers for this lesson: news for children, news for teenagers, and news for adults. When I have students who want to get better at listening, I have them start with listening to news videos that were made for children. When we listen to videos, I frequently stop to ask questions. I do this to make sure that the student understands what is happening in the video. If the Runa did not understand, I will stop and replay the video, then explain what the video is saying in simpler language. Then I would thenreplay the section one more time. From there, we watched as much as we could together in a lesson. To keep improving, I assigned homework related to the video. Normally, I would give the student a section to watch. Then I would ask her to write a summary of the section for homework. In addition, I asked her to write any words she was unfamiliar with. In the following lesson, I would review her summary, give grammar feedback and tell her the meaning of the unknown words. For the next lesson, I focus on free conversation. Free conversation is good practice to help a student with understanding native English. Moreover, it forces the student to practice their listening skills while also preparing a response. While we were talking, I took notes on how to improve grammar as well as writing any new words we encountered. For free conversation lessons, I normally assign a diary entry as homework. This is done to help the student learn how to talk about things they are interested in, as well as practicing writing too. I alternate the type of lessons every week to make sure we are practicing all aspects of English. When the student and I feel comfortable with listening to the kid’s news, I will then have them proceed. to teenager's news. That is how we achieved Runa’s success.
