Hello! My name is Keanin Burry, I was born in the city of Townsville from north Queensland, Australia. My home city is sadly a very quiet, boring place. BUT. All around Townsville is some of the best wildlife and nature reserves in the whole of Australia. My home boasts being one of the sunniest cities in the world. It has almost three hundred days of complete sun light every year and very little rain during our wet season. Coming from such a hot and tropical climate I truly do enjoy the Japanese summer even with the humidity and bright sun, it honestly feels just like home.

The most exciting thing about my home city is its nickname “The gateway to the Great Barrier Reef”. The Great barrier reef is only a few hours by boat from the beaches of Townsville as well as many other smaller reefs and islands. The oceans off the coast of Australia are full of some of the most amazing sea life, in one weekend I swam with dolphins, sharks and sea turtles. During my school years I would go out with friends to the small islands that dot the coast of Townsville to camp and go snorkelling along the reefs. I spent hours just relaxing on different beaches. The largest island which is only thirty minutes by ferry is Magnetic Island. Magnetic island is full of resorts and hotels along with the entire island is surrounded by beautiful beaches. Any festival or show held in Townsville is usually held on the beaches of Magnetic Island.

The Australian Institute of Marine Science is based in Townsville and is one of the largest marine research centres in the world, they collaborate with a local aquarium called Reef HQ. Reef HQ offer tours and demonstrations of on shark feeding and a ‘touch pool’ where people can touch and pet stingrays and other small sea life. A bonus to living right next to Reef HQ was my wife and I were eligible for a yearly pass, we would spend hours just watching fish and enjoying the tours like the Turtle Hospital. In Australia sea turtles are a protected species and Reef HQ is one of the biggest centres in the world, many people volunteer to help care for sick and injured turtles. The effort displayed inspires me to work harder and help others in the community. My favourite place to visit was actually another wildlife reserve just outside of Townsville called Billabong Sanctuary. If Reef HQ is all about the ocean life, then Billabong Sanctuary is all about the native life on land, they have crocodiles and dingos (a small wild dog native only to Australia) as well as all many reptiles and insects that can only be found in Australia.
